Reef Net Pictorial (click on images for a closer look)

-Reef net boats are anchored in rows with two boats for each gear.
-Salmon are spotted entering the gear by fisherman standing high above the water.
-To catch the Salmon the net must be pulled within 15 to 30 seconds after seeing the fish entering the net.
-As the net is pulled the two boats swing together forcing the fish into a pocket.
-the net is pulled so that the pocket of Salmon is forced against the outside boat.
-The polaroid sunglasses used to spot the Salmon are shielded to prevent glare.
-The pocketed Salmon are lifted or rolled into the live box where they remain until sold to the buyer.
-The Salmon are alive when picked up by the buyer. Prior to this time any prohibited fish are sorted and released alive.
-The remaining salmon are scooped into a brailer to be lifted, weighed, placed in totes in the buyer, and iced for the trip.
-The buyer boat boom carries a load of prime condition Salmon for the fresh fish market.
